{"id":359,"date":"2022-05-05T10:57:55","date_gmt":"2022-05-05T08:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/glintconcepts.co.za\/?p=359"},"modified":"2022-05-10T16:31:32","modified_gmt":"2022-05-10T14:31:32","slug":"building-a-screen-printing-press-part-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glintconcepts.co.za\/index.php\/2022\/05\/05\/building-a-screen-printing-press-part-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Building a screen printing press &#8211; Part 4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spring loaded bistable lifting and lowering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this post, we are going to explore how to go about building a part that looks and works something like shown in the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video demo-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1200 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1200\" autoplay controls loop src=\"https:\/\/glintconcepts.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/0001-0065-3.ogv\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A swinging arm pivots around a fixed point, and a spring causes the mechanism to have two rest positions (a bistable system); one position of rest is where the screen is raised, and another point of rest is where the screen is lowered to a horizontal position.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glintconcepts.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/strut-2-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-420\" width=\"411\" height=\"228\"\/><figcaption>One of Four Struts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We start with four 90mm long sections of 15x5mm rectangular aluminum edging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This kind of material is readily available in standard sizes from hardware stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using a Dremel tool with a metal cutting wheel, or alternatively a hack saw and file, we shape one end until it forms a semicircle. The fitted piece should look like the illustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the two struts in each pair, the lower (or swing) strut, will need a 9mm or 10mm hole drilled on one side, and a 5mm slot cut on the other. A 5mm bolt is attached to the bracing strut by means of two nuts through this hole from the side.  This bolt will become our top anchor for our spring. There are two rivets from the side, and one from below.  Holes will need to be drilled to accomodate those rivets, and their size and exact position will depend on the actual braces used in the mount.  So we won&#8217;t attempt to provide measurements here.  We suggest using a 3.8mm rivet.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/glintconcepts.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/bottom-slider-1-1024x577.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-426\" width=\"524\" height=\"292\"\/><figcaption>Lower bracket connection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bottom strut is connected by inserting a 5mm screw with a rounded head through the convenient hole behind the slot, and fastened to the bracket by means of two 5mm nuts and two 5mm washers.
